Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level domain names remained running.
